Seven

AS RAFE GOES TO THE bathroom to take care of the condom and wash up, it really hits me.

We had sex.

Me and Rafe.

And I have no idea why it happened or what it means.

I’m not the kind of person who does well with questions unanswered or situations in flux. To be comfortable, I need to know what’s going on. I sit up on the side of the bed and reach down to grab my gown and panties, pulling them back on.

Rafe pauses on his way out of the bathroom. He eyes me as I’m pulling down my nightgown. “Running away now?”

“No, I’m not running away.” The man really does have a knack for annoying me—even in the most unpredictable situations.

“It looks like you’re about to bolt.”

“I’m putting my gown back on.”

“I see that.” There’s a little smile on the corners of his mouth, but I’m not sure whether I can find a matching one in his eyes. “I suppose I should be gratified you made it this long without running. At least we both got to come.”

“What did you expect to happen now?” My voice is light, but it’s a serious question. I genuinely need to know.

He reaches down and grabs his underwear, pulling them back on.

When he doesn’t answer, I say, “I know you weren’t serious about the snuggling thing.”

He chuckles and sits down on the edge of the bed beside me. “I thought it was a possibility we could have another go.”

“Kind of ambitious, aren’t you?”

“Always.”

“I don’t know.” I’m trying to be honest but also like I’m not taking what happened between us too seriously. There’s nothing I want less than being put at a disadvantage where Rafe is concerned. “I had a really good time, and I feel pretty good about things right now.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“If we give it another go, as you so eloquently put it, it might start to feel awkward.”

“Why would it?”

“Because. Sex sometimes does.”

“Sure. But it also sometimes gets even better if you do it again.” His expression looks relaxed. Like he’s teasing me.

It should be a relief, but it actually makes my stomach drop slightly. As much as I’d like it to be different, he’s not taking this seriously. Which means I can’t either. “If it gets any better than what we just did, then neither one of us are ever getting out of bed again.”

He snorts in sudden amusement, like I surprised him. “I’m okay with that.”

“I bet.” I sigh. “I’m sure this is all rote to you, but I’ve never actually done it before.”

“Done what?” He tilts his head sideways to look at me.

“Had a one-night stand. Casual sex. Whatever. I’ve only had sex in relationships.” It’s a risk to be sincere with him—even more so than it usually is—but that’s who I am. I can only pretend so much.

He turns his head away from me and stares at the floor in silence. For what feels like a long time.

My heart jumps and starts to race. Maybe I said the wrong thing.
